Toys for Men

I've always loved toys. When I was 4 or 5, I loved playing with wooden blocks. When I got a little older I had a little toy train set. By the time I was 7 or 8, I had Tonka Toys, toy soldiers, cap guns, model airplanes, you name it. By the time I was12 or 13 I had gotten into hunting and fishing, but I still had toys - model rockets, RC airplanes, and various electronic kits. At 16, my preferred toy became my 1970 Barracuda (wish I still had it) and I've been into cars ever since. I've found that as I get older, my taste in toys changes but my love for toys never goes away. And, while I still enjoy some of the same toys as when I was younger (model trains, model airplanes, guns, computers, etc) my choices are getting more and more complicated. If anything though, I enjoy playing with toys now more than ever.

New Toy for My Man Cave – Sony Camcorder

My wife and I have been talking about getting a Camcorder for over a year now but we could never find one that was cheap enough to make my wife happy and also worked good in low light (to make me happy). We finally decided on the Sony HDR-CX150 High Definition Handycam Camcorder. So far it works great. Battery life is about 2 hours and it can also record about 2 hours of video on the internal memory. It works great in low light and it should be perfect for documenting all my Man Cave projects. It can focus down to about 1" and has 25X optical zoom at the other end. Should also be a lot of fun to take on fishing trips, road trips, etc. Squidoo has a full Sony HDR-CX150 Camcorder review if you want more info.

Update on our Honda S2000

When we first bought our Honda S2000 we didn't have room in the Man Cave for it so it stayed parked in the driveway under a car cover. One day I came home from work to find the cover half removed. Hmmm... the wife and kid both said they didn't do it, it wasn't windy that day... I can only guess that someone was checking it out with the intention of coming back later and stealing it (Honda S2000's are one of the most stolen cars). So I took a day off from work to stay home and make enough room to park it inside.

Nice Rack

To Your Health

Leave it to the Germans to do this study... According to a study done in Germany, staring at women's breasts for at least 10 minutes a day is healthy. According to Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist and author of the study, gawking at women’s breasts is almost at par with an intense exercise regime and can prolong the lifespan of a man by five years. "Just 10 minutes of staring at the charms of a well-endowed female, is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out." Just think... if 10 minutes of staring is equal to a 30 minute workout, then 2 or 3 hours would be the same as an all day workout. Now you have an excuse... when you're wife complains about you staring at some hottie, just explain that you're doing it for your health. If she persists, ask her why your health isn't a concern for her. To get started, just stare at the picture at the top of this post for 10 minutes. There, I think you're feeling better already...

A New Car

We just got 2 new cars - new to us anyway. My wife got a Honda S-2000 and I got a 1962 Buick Special station wagon. My favorite is the Buick but I gotta admit the Honda is a lot more fun to drive. The only problem is I don't have room in my Man Cave, uhm, garage to park them so now the wife is all over me to get the garage cleaned out. That won't solve all my problems though because it means I'll have to move the Valiant and my Barracuda outside. I don't really want to park the Barracuda outside and I'm sure my neighbors don't want to look at my ugly Valiant parked in the driveway. I'm thinking I need a bigger garage...

Model Railroad for my Man Cave

Three of my favorite things are planes, trains, and automobiles. I've got the plane and automobile aspects covered pretty well but not the trains until now. My wife says I'm taking up too much room in the house so it looks like the Man Cave is the only place I have to set up a model train. Since the, uhm, environment in the Man cave isn't exactly controlled, my scale stuff won't last so I've decided to go with American Flyer trains. I just got some track, a locomotive, and a few pieces of rolling stock. It should be a lot of fun. I think these older American Flyer trains run on AC current instead of CD like the newer trains, so I have a lot to learn. Lots of neat mechanical stuff on the engine, like a forward/reverse controller (can't just reverse the polarity on an AC motor), cammed sound unit, smoke generator, etc. Should be a lot of fun and give me some incentive to get off my lazy behind and get the Man Cave cleaned out.

Bachelor for Two Weeks!!!

My wife and older son are leaving Thursday for a 2 week trip to China, leaving me and the little one home alone. YES!!! Should be a nice 2 week vacation for all of us. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off and the following week. I'm hoping to finish cleaning the Cave and spending a lot of time working on my model airplanes. I love building and flying model airplanes but with a wife and two kids it's hard to get anything done sometimes. Hopefully with no honey-do's to do for 2 weeks I can get at least 1 into flying condition. I'm also hoping to get my Plymouth Barracuda back from the shop during the time they're gone, but that has run into a few snags so I'm not sure.

Even though I'm going to be without adult supervision it's not going to be one big party. I'm actually planning on starting a program of walking to lose weight. I really need to lose my gut and I figure if I can lose 10 or 15 lbs while the wife is away, she'll be so thrilled she won't notice how much money I spent while she was away. I'm also thinking about taking a couple of days to go to Bishop, CA. I really love it down there but my wife doesn't really like to go there. It would be nice to visit without having to drag her along to a place she doesn't enjoy.

Computer for my Cave

I'm thinking about a computer for my Man Cave, but I'm not sure what to get. The obvious choice would be a PC. Besides using it as a computer, it could also be used as a DVD player, hi fi, etc. I can download pictures and videos to it. It will run just about any software I need to support my "activities" - database, spread sheet, email, etc.  I can even write my own software for it. For a man cave, though, it's a little too generic for my tastes. I need a PC, but I'm going to have to supplement it with something else, something more "computer-like."

A VitaMix Blender for the Cave

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I bought a VitaMix blender. They're a bit pricey, but I like it so much I'm thinking about getting a second one for the man cave (no way my wife will let me use "her" VitaMix blender in the garage). Why? I'm thinking... daquaris... margaritas... and that drink I don't know the name of, but it has coffee, Bailey's, Kahlua, vodka, and ice all blended together... Besides, during the summer I even enjoy drinking healthy drinks once in awhile, and the VitaMix excels at making good tasting fruit and vegetable drinks. Having one in the garage would save me from getting yelled at for making something to drink without washing my hands first or tracking grease into the house.
